... as most of you know, I volunteered last year starting in March for now Sen. Jim Webb (D). At the time, we didn't think he would make it out of the primary, as his opponent was a respectable long-time Virginia Democrat with all the right endorsements. You want some tough fundraising calls? Try asking Democrats to donate money to a former Republican.
Nevertheless, we made it out of the primary by the skin of our teeth (11,000 votes or 6%), but broke, and up against incumbent Sen. George Allen (R) who had over $20 million dollars and the inside track to the 2008 Republican Presidential nomination. We were down in some polls by 30 points. And then macaca happened. For those who forgot...
The polls shifted ten points overnight and twenty points by the end of August. The rest was history. Notlarrysabato, the blog that broke the story, is having macaca week, so I urge you all to visit his website.
As for little old me, the race showed me that I can make a difference (Webb beat Allen by 9,000 votes overall, or 3 votes per precinct - I can definitely say I delivered that many votes for the Fairfax precinct I worked) so I am now here in Iowa. So if you want to blame someone for me being here, blame Sen. Webb. Of course, I have nothing but thanks for the man. I can only attempt to live up to his greatness.
