All work and no play...

... makes Mike a dull boy.

I know I have been mostly posting "work stuff," although "work" is not really "work" since I am trying to save the world. Nevertheless, while I don't have a lot of downtime, there is indeedy some downtime. So what do I do? Well, the first week I got here, I was so tired I pretty much just read a little bit every night and then conked out. My roommate Jonathan, who works for Bill Richardson, is a cool guy, so sometimes we will just hang out on the porch and have a beer.

Most likely, however, is that I hang out with my fellow interns, and sometimes the staff. Hanging out with staff is a little weird, both because they are my "superiors," and because they have been together for six months now, so I am a little bit of an outsider. It's all good though. I am sure it will pass over time, and while a bunch of the interns are now leaving to go back to school, there will be others, and I am pretty tight with the ones who are here for the long haul. In any case, I find plenty of things to do in my spare time.

For example, we have pictures taken with other presidential candidates. I have not met another one yet, and Biden was supposed to be at this thing I was going to on Tuesday, but he had to unexpectedly travel overseas. Contrary to what others may believe, I do not hate the other Democratic candidates (or the other Republican candidates, really). I just think Obama will do the best job. After all, we are all loyal Americans, despite what the Fake News Channel will tell you.

Sometimes we play games (pictured above is Risk, but Ashley is trying to get a poker game together) and have a drink, or play ping-pong at headquarters. Paul Tewes, the state director (basically the top dog for Obama in Iowa) actually ordered someone to set up a ping-pong tournament among the staff and interns. I came in a few days late for that one. Maybe next time.

One Saturday we went over to Patrick's house to hang. Patrick goes to Marquette, and his folks live in a nice suburb of Des Moines. You have got a love a house that has a Josh Lyman quote over their dining room. Patrick was born in St. Louis and is thus a huge Cardinals fan. His folks then moved him to Iowa, went to actually live in Rockville for five years (woohoo!), and then moved back to Iowa. He has a lot of cool Cardinals memorabilia, but his parents go back to DC often, and they were at the game where Cal tied Gehrig's record. Awesome. Marcus, for some reason, was obsessed with playing croquet that night. As you can see, it was really, really, freaking dark and hard to see. And the bugs weren't helping things out either.

It should come to no surprise, however, to learn that for the most part, we go out. Pictured above is David Kwait's last day extravaganza. Dave was the second intern for the campaign, joining in June, and was in charge of Young Professsional Outreach, which is what I will be taking over from him. Dave is going back to Notre Dame for law school. We actually started out at some bar near the office, made our way to Rohan's (our really cool boss) apartment for a viewing of the Logo network Democratic debate, and then went to Zen Sushi for dinner (pictured above - it's what is to be expected for a landlocked state) before heading out to Liar's Club. Again. I hear the clubs in West Des Moines are better, so I may have trek out there one of these days. Stay tuned...
